A couple weeks ago in the Presto Pasta Night’s round up, Kitchenetta of Got No Milk made home made pasta. It looks so easy, I was sucked in by the idea and tried to make it myself….. I should have known better……
So I took her recipe:
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 large eggs
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons water
doubled it (of course) and then tried to run it thru the pasta machine I found in the back of my pantry. (Look familiar Ed? Marsha? I received this “gift” when my FIL was moving and it has been waiting for its chance to shine in the kitchen for years. Hubby said he had very fond memories of making pasta when he was younger)
Mistake #1- Kitchenetta did NOT use a pasta machine. She cut hers by hand. The pasta maker was completely gummed up and a disaster. Jami started cutting- great project for an 8 yo!
Obviously, this dough was too wet for the machine. So we found another recipe. I didn’t bookmark it (covered in pasta gum) but the key point was NO WATER!! What it did have was a pile of flour on the counter and you broke the eggs into the flour “bowl” and they were supposed to stay in there HA! I so wish someone besides Jami and I were there to take a picture of this! It took all four of our hands to keep the egg from going all over the counter- they didn’t take into account Silveira eggs! HA!
Anyway, we finally got it mixed up, I kneaded it (by hand) for the allotted time, than we ran that thru the machine.
Even after all the disaster, I would defiantly make home made pasta again. If we go with the 2nd recipe from the beginning, I think we would avoid all the mess with the machine and skip right to the easy part. It was delicious, and so easy (ingredients wise) just flour, eggs and salt. I am already dreaming of other flavors to add to the mix- oregano, basil, yum!!
Oh, and its been 20 days since I last went to the grocery store! I went yesterday for bread, milk & ice cream cones (for our home made ice cream!) but that’s it! I have missed out in some of my favorite round ups – Rachael Ray’s and Tyler Florence, but its been great to see the back of some of the shelves! And we’re not even close to running out of food! I guess I was hoarding a bit…. no comment Adam!! 😉
One round up I have been able to join in weekly is Presto Pasta Nights hosted this week by Graziana of Erbe in Cucina. Check them out on Friday to see what other delicious pasta recipes everyone is cookin’ up!
