Discovering Goosewing Beach Preserve: A Hidden Gem in Little Compton, Rhode Island
Nestled in the quaint coastal town of Little Compton, Rhode Island, Goosewing Beach Preserve offers a serene escape for nature lovers and beachgoers alike. This 75-acre preserve, managed by The Nature Conservancy, features a unique blend of sandy shoreline, coastal pond, and rolling dunes that create a haven for native wildlife and those seeking peace by the sea.
A Natural Sanctuary
Goosewing Beach is renowned for its unspoiled beauty and ecological importance. The preserve supports a wide variety of plants and animals, including the federally threatened piping plover and least tern. During nesting season (April to September), marked areas help protect these species—so please tread carefully and respect the signage.
Getting There & Parking Tips
To visit Goosewing Beach, park at South Shore Beach, located at 140 South Shore Beach Road. From there, enjoy a scenic walk along the beach to reach the preserve. Parking is $20 on weekdays and $25 on weekends and holidays during peak season.
Portable toilets are available at South Shore Beach, but the preserve itself is wonderfully rustic—so bring your own water, snacks, and sun protection.
What to Explore
Goosewing Beach Preserve stretches along the Atlantic Ocean and offers spectacular views of Cuttyhunk Island and Martha’s Vineyard. Grassy trails wind through the dunes to the Benjamin Family Environmental Center, which features exhibits about local ecology (open seasonally).
The preserve is ideal for birdwatching, photography, and quiet walks—just stick to the paths to help protect the sensitive dune ecosystem.
